A divemaster will work with you to correctly start you in a sport you will enjoy for years. I have been diving since 1985 and have enjoyed every dive. Some of those dives were in the 100+ foot visiblity and warmth of Hawaii and many in the cold waters of the Great Lakes in the Midwest. There are many good places to dive on Maui, go to the dive shops and ask where the great places are. They will also warn you of the places you should not go and give yo the latest updates on conditions.
